Creative Director & Board Member
Caleb Scharf is one of the founders of YHouse, and currently its Creative Director. He is also Director of Astrobiology at Columbia University and a Global Science Coordinator for the Earth-Life Science Institute’s Origins Network at the Tokyo Institute for Technology. He is the winner of the 2011 Chambliss Medal from the American Astronomical Society. His popular science writing includes the critically acclaimed Gravity’s Engines, and The Copernicus Complex, op-eds for The New York Times and Los Angeles Times, as well as a regular blog at Scientific American with close to half a million annual readers. His media appearances have included work with the BBC, PBS, Discovery Channel, History Channel, National Geographic, Book TV, NPR, and the Science Channel.

Research
Caleb’s research spans cosmology, astrophysics, exoplanetary science, astrobiology, and data science. His current projects include work on dynamical modeling of planetary systems, exoplanet habitability, and origins of life probabilities. He is now combining these interests with questions of emergence in complex systems, the interplay between biological awareness and the evolution of planetary biospheres, and examining consciousness as a computational phenomenon.
